In the evolving cannabis market, there’s more choices than ever and many edibles now include some of the lesser-known minor cannabinoids, but what exactly do they mean?
The Endocannabinoid system in our bodies.
First, it helps to understand what cannabinoids are and how they affect the human body. Most people are not aware that our bodies contain an endocannabinoid (EC) system with receptors throughout our body that interact with our nervous system. The EC interacts with the body to maintain homeostasis and aids in the regulation of appetite, memory, and pain (Rowden, 2022).
Most of us are familiar with the well-known cannabinoids THC and CBD. To summarize, THC is the one we most associate with cannabis as it’s also the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant whereas CBD is the non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant.
CBN is also a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. While there is no “high” experienced from the consumption, CBN does provide some sleep-inducing benefits (US Weekly, 2023). Not only does it help with sleep but it does so without any of the next day’s grogginess associated with most other sleeping products. There’s still so much we’re learning about the benefits of CBN but so far it seems promising, including some research suggesting neuroprotective properties as well (US Weekly, 2023).
CBG is another promising non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has demonstrated beneficial properties. The compound works like CBD in that it binds with receptors in the brain (Rowden, 2022). In addition to neuroprotective properties, CBG has also demonstrated potential benefit against cognitive decline, anti-inflammatory properties, and has demonstrated positive anti-depressant effects (Smith, 2023).
